Bang Your Head

The Metal Festivals season is started !
And one of my fav is the "Bang Your Head" in Germany (Balingen).

The fest started in 1996 in Tübingen with about 600 people ; since that, he has grown and moved in Balingen, with about 18 000 people (a sold out edition in 2005 – 20 000 - with Twisted Sister).

It’s a hard rock and heavy festival, with a very nice atmosphere, nice shops, good food and drinks, and, of course, very good bands ! Since the 1st edition, Wasp, Dio, Motorhead, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Gotthard, Doro, Slayer, Judas Priest, Accept, Saxon,In Flames and many others have played there.

I’ve personally discovered Crazy Lixx, Rebellious Spirit and Sister thanks to this very friendly fest.

2 scenes: a big one outdoor and a smaller indoor (there is also a Warm up the day before the festival starts).
2 campings : one next to the festival site,  and one about 4 km from it, well served by a free bus.

This year, we can see Twisted Sister, Europe, Anthrax, Axel Rudy Pell, Unisonic, Kissin’ Dynamite, and many more !!

Confess : "Jail"

Track list :

01. Pray for the Prey
02. Relationshit
03. Scream
04. Pay Before I Go
05. Take Aim
06. Bloodstained Highway
07. Setting Sails
08. Back to Hell
09. Got Lucky
10. Cardiac Arrest
11. Get Me Down
12. Intervention (Sin & Tonic, Pt. 2)
13. What’s Love Got to Do with It (Bonus)

Confess is a Swedish band formed in 2008.
“Jail” is their first album, released after a demo and an EP (“The Gin Act”).
The guys define their style as hard-rock/heavy metal with 80’s influences.
In my opinion, Confess plays sleaze music, and I don’t mind if some people says they sound like Hardcore Superstar or Crashdiet : their music is fuckin’ good !!

I’m not a music specialist or a musician ; therefore, my review is only based on my own feeling and emotions.

“Jail” is composed by 13 tracks (one of which is a cover).
The first time I listened to this album, it was love at first sight ! And since that, I play it every day : it makes me on a great mood !

This album is very punchy, with some good and well written lyrics, amazing guitars, good drums, fuckin’ bass and perfect backing vocals and vocals.

I love all the songs ! Here’s my feeling about my favs :

Relationshit” and “Scream” were already known when the album was released : kick ass songs with chorus that stay in your head and during which you just want to headbang and jump until you die !

Pay before I go” is THE song !!!! I can listen to this one  all day long… It’s a very energic and powerful one ; “air guitar” mode “on” !!

Take Aim” is a wonderful ballad. I’m not very fan of this kind of songs… but this one is absolutely beautiful… Nice melody, emotional sing and great and strong lyrics. It’s not a "love song" as we usually used to hear… It makes me crying... pure emotion.

Bloodstained Highway” is a very catchy song and “Setting Sails” has a very nice Irish bridge !

The rest of the album is pure happiness : killer riffs, beautiful solos, perfect rhythmic section… We can even find a little symphonic touch in “Intervention”, with a very pure and emotional part.

And to finish this excellent 1st album, Confess has made a very good Tina Turner’s cover “What’s Love Got to Do With It”; if you don’t like the original song, you’re gonna love this one !!

Sweden has a bunch of awesome metal bands. And now, you can count Confess in ! They are very talented, play some very good music, have a rockin’ attitude and look, and last but not least, they’r’e very friendly.

You must absolutely  buy this album.
Turn up the volume and “Scream” !!!!

Tattoed or not tattoed ?

I’m tattoed and totally addicted to tattoos !

I’ve started later : I was 34 when I get my first tat. I've taken my time to really think about it, because being tattoed isn’t a game : you will be inked for the rest of your life.

So, what do you have to do to be tattoed ?

As I said, first you have to seriously think about it. It’s not a beauty accessory or a jewel. It’s definitive (even if you have the possibility to delete a tattoo with laser… but it’s not the goal isn’t it ?). You really have to be sure about your decision, about the subject and the spot on your skin you want to be tattoed (It’s important to ask you if your tattoo can become a problem for your job for example...).

The price is an important fact because a tattoo is generally expensive.

Regarding the pain, it depends of your tolerance and the spot of your future tattoo (the anaesthetic creams don’t really work).

But as Laura Satana (tattoo artist in Paris) says : “You should deserve a tattoo. It looses its value if you haven’t suffered to get it”.

When you’re ready, you have to choose the tattoo artist who can realize your wish. Tattooing is an art and there are a lot of great excellent artists all over the world !
And most ot them are specialized in a particular kind of tats (old school, realistic, portrait, biomecanic etc…). It’s better to go seeing several of them to see their work and talk with them about your project.
Watch theirs books and  their Internet gallery to have an idea of what they do. And of course, you can also use word-of-mouth if you know some tattoed people.

Be always careful about the shop hygiene, it’s primordial ! The tattoo artist should use sterilized material (with single use for the needles) and wear some gloves.

He will often do for you the drawing of your project (by using your ideas), but you also can bring him your own drawing or some motives you like.
And please, make sure to not copy a tattoo which already exist : a tat is personal, has often a story, is full of symbolism… do your own project with your own ideas. A good tattoo artist won’t generally tattoo something already done…

When the appointment is taken, you don’t need to have a special preparation before it.
You just have to be fit and healthy and of course, not drink some alcohol, or take drug or aspirin before the session (aspirin thins blood…). Ask the tattoo artist if you have to be shaved or not (they often prefer to do it themselves).

After the session(s), you have to take care of your tat by a strict hygiene and by using some specific cream (like Bepanthen for example) during the healing of your tattoo ; no swimming-pool, no sun, no bath during a few weeks. Your tattoo artist is gonna explain you all these things.

And then, enjoy your tattoo !!!
And don’t forget to regularly nourish it with a moisturizer and to not expose your tat to the sun (or with a highly cream protection). The sun is your tattoo enemy !

Metal music and stereotypes

I listen to metal since 1988, when I discovered this music thanks to some “metalheads”friends : at this time, I was listening to The Cure, and I remember that my friends told me : "Yeah it’s not bad music, but it lacks guitars ! ".
Then, they made me discover two amazing albums : " Master of Puppets " (Metallica) and "The Number of the Beast " (Iron Maiden) and I immediately plunged into the pot and  never emerged !

During all these years of listening, I could hear everything and anything about this music and those who are fans of.
No, metalheads are not marginal or antisocial (for the anecdote, one day my little sister and I had to go outside and I proudly put on my perfecto – with a lot of patches and badges - and she said, totally scared “Do you go outside like that ???”.and she didn’t accompany me... and after that, in the street, an old woman did an amazing detour to avoid having to cross me : she was probably afraid that I steal her handbag... pffff...
"Clothes do not make the man" right ?).
Stereotypes about metal will unfortunately always exist...

Metal isn’t music , it's noise !
Not music ? Indeed, everybody knows that metal musicians don’t play with real instruments like guitars or drums...
Ok, guitars can be noisy and saturated, singing is sometimes grunts or screams, but the metal isn’t only that, it’s also very melodic songs, with nice and intelligent lyrics, beautiful clear voices and it even can be lyrical or symphonic.

Only teens in adolescent crisis listen to metal
I 'm 42 and I listen to metal for approximativly 26 years.
When I go to a concert, I often see (with a great pleasure) that several generations are represented, not just young generation, you know what I mean ? I know that many teenagers listen to metal and move on with that ; but many of them (like me) continue to listen to this music during their whole life. Moreover, some great cult bands are still there : Iron Maiden, AC.DC , Metallica, Aerosmith... Metal isn’t just a rebellion act...

Metalheads are satanists
No, metalheads don’t kill sheeps for the glory of Satan...
Ok, it’s clear that metal attracts some provocative people, but it's often folklore (except for a few of them who are really satanic - but I don’t know enough about this subject to talk about and they are a minority). We all know that in all kind of musical style, we can find persons who want to shock.
And I can add that metal isn’t anti-religious as it’s often said... There even exist some Christian metal bands.

Metalheads are alcoholic
Or course, they like drinking beer (or Jägermeister ;-) ). That’s all.
Metalheads simply like to party, like many people on the planet ! What’s the interest to be totally high , for example, when you’re at a concert ?
Or course, exceptions exist, but like everywhere, right ?

Metalheads are macho
Metal music has a highly masculine image, it's true. But there are more and more women who play metal, and many others who listen to it.
And there isn’t any problem between males and females. Metalheads are very tolerant, however your gender, skin colour or job...

Metalheads are awful , dirty and ugly
They have long and greasy hair, they stink and they’re always looking for a fight.
Contrary to what was said concerning some tragic events (with Judas Priest for example), metal music doesn’t create violence or criminal acts. It may seem violent and some lyrics are, but it’s just an outlet.
I’ve never seen any fight at a concert. Even the famous “pogo” is only a funny moment. Metalheads are most of the time very solidary and friendly.

And concerning it’s negative image, are Nikki Sixx or Jon Bon Jovi ugly ? ;-) ?

                         Horns up !!
PS : feel free to comment ;-)
